For me, the situation is even more stressful when I need to buy something for grandma. For me, it really has to mean something, as opposed to just another thing. With my friends, it is perfectly fine for me to buy something completely random.
With grandma, it is just different. For the past few years, I have gotten my own 65 years old grandma lots of gifts. Also, in the past few years, I have helped my friends choose Christmas gifts for grandma and Mother’s Day gifts for grandma.
Some were completely awesome, some were just plain mediocre, while others were complete disasters. The following is strictly about my experiences, the things I have done personally. There is no hype, promise, or advertising. It is strictly what happened.

1. Digital Photo Frame
I bought a digital photo frame for my grandma as a Christmas present last year, but it cost me around $55. The package arrived safely but in simple packaging in just 3 days. My grandma is really bad with technology and things like that, so at first, I was really scared that she might not even use it at all. I set it up myself with around 200 pictures of my family, old black-and-white pictures, as well as newer pictures taken during weddings and birthdays. Although my grandma was confused at first, after two days, she started enjoying it as it was placed on her side table and was turned on every morning. But what really surprised me was that my grandma became emotionally attached to it. It’s just like I feel the presence of my family around her all the time. The flipside is that the screen might not function properly at times and she clicks the wrong option. In such cases, she calls me in distress. Had I known this beforehand, I would have opted for one which allows changing the pictures using my phone without having to visit the store. I had thought of purchasing a simple photo album too, but this feels more alive. The gift which I have given her isn’t one which a granny who doesn’t like screens or faces would appreciate
2. Custom Photo Calendar
I decided to purchase a photo calendar and have it customized for Mother’s Day. The price was roughly $25. I received my product after about 5 days. It came in a neat package. Each month was filled with a different photo from my family. There was a photo from her wedding in the month of January, a photo of my cousin’s baby in March, and a photo from my own graduation in July. I was surprised that she used it to write down birthdays and appointments with the doctor. She used it every day. The only bad part about my gift is that the paper used in the photo calendar was not very durable. As a result, by the end of the year, my gift looked old. I thought about purchasing a photo frame to hang a photo in the kitchen. I thought this was a better idea because the photo calendar was functional. This gift is not suitable for grandmas who have a mobile calendar.
3. Comfortable Slippers or Blanket
One time I bought her memory foam-type slippers during the winter for around $18. She is the type of person who complains a lot about cold feet, and I thought these might help her. At first, she said they were “too soft,” but after one week, she stopped wearing her old shoes inside the house. That was a great success for me. What was surprising is the fact that her comfort is more important than looks. It has a disadvantage, though, since the sole was thin after using it for six months. It still works, but it is no longer strong. If I were going to buy again, I would pay a little more for a better product. I was also thinking of buying her a heated blanket, but she opted for the slippers since she is the type of person who is often moving around the house. It is not for grandmas who dislike soft things.
4. Recorded Memories
It’s one of the most emotional presents I have ever made for my grandma.I collected voice messages from all of her kids and grandchildren. These were stored on a USB device. It did not cost me anything except time and effort. All her kids and grandchildren took turns recording short messages such as “We love you” or telling her short stories. On her first listening to the device, she actually shed tears. She said she felt as though everyone was talking to her at once. However, I found this gift interesting because I did not know how much she would want to hear those messages every now and then, especially when she felt lonely. However, I found one drawback; she sometimes cannot access the messages and needs to be assisted. However, I think I would store them on her phone or make them a CD if I were to make this again. It’s a gift for those who are comfortable with emotional issues.
5. Handwritten Letters or Notes
I decided to write my grandma a letter on her birthday. It was four pages long and comprised memories from her childhood. I did not have to pay any money to write it. However, it meant something to her. What surprised me was that something so simple had more value than any expensive present. However, there is one problem with my handwriting. To my surprise, sometimes she asks what it says. The next time, I would type it and print it out. This gift may not be for people who are sensitive about emotions expressed in any message.
6 .Outing or Special Meal
Me and my mother took my grandma out to eat at a small café near our home and spent about 20 dollars. We didn’t do anything special, just talked and ate. She told us stories about her youth that I had never heard before. What surprised us was that she talked about this day more than any gift we had bought. The downside is that weather and health can affect plans. Sometimes she feels tired and wants to go home early. This gift is not for grandmas who prefer staying indoors.
7. Houseplants
The thing we did for my friend’s grandma’s birthday was we bought her a plant, which cost around $12. It looked nice at first, but then eventually, the plant died because she did not water it. However, she felt bad about this, and we realized that she said she’s “too old for plants.” The surprising thing was when I realized the plant we gave her died, yet she still appreciated the fact that we gave her one. I think if I’m going to give this again to someone, I should give one that’s artificial or one that’s low maintenance, like a cactus. I think this kind of gift shouldn’t be given to someone who will end up forgetting to take care of them.
8. LED Candles or Regular Candles
I gave my grandma LED candles as I was worried about the fire element. She uses LED candles regularly when she sleeps at night, and she tells me it helps her feel at ease. I once gave her real candles as well, and she forgot to blow them out, which made me scared. The disadvantage of LED candles is that they do not feel as cozy as the other kind of candle. Next time, I should buy better quality LED candles with soft light. This gift is not suitable for those who hate artificial things.
9. Something She’s Interested In (Crochet)
My friend gave her grandma knitting tools because her grandma loves knitting. She spends a lot of time knitting scarves and other bags. However, I was surprised by her enthusiasm to learn new skills at this old age. The disadvantage of this tool is that low quality tools are often easy to break, and yarn gets tangled at times. The next time, I would buy tools of good quality. The tools are best given to those who have hobbies.
10. A Piece of Jewelry
My dad gifted my grandma a silver bracelet that costs about $30. She only wears it on special occasions such as weddings or gatherings. It gives her the “feeling of being young again.” What surprised me is that she does not wear it because she fears losing it. So the disadvantage is that expensive gifts make her nervous. The gift to give her next time is something a bit cheaper. This gift is not suitable or applicable to people who do not like accessories.
11. Memory Jar
On my grandma’s 60th birthday I created a jar filled with a hundred little pieces of paper containing handwritten memories, jokes, and positive messages. She has to open one each night before she sleeps. The surprising part was that she read one every night without missing a single day. The bad side, however, is that I took a long time to jot down these pieces of paper. I think I would make it again, though, by involving my family members in writing them. It’s not a gift for someone who hates writing.
12. A Recipe Book
I collected family recipes and printed them into a book and gave them to my grandma on mother’s day. The cost was around 20 dollars to print and bind it. It is used by her every week when she cooks. What I found interesting was that she was making comments in the book too. The drawback is that it took a lot of time to collect the recipes. This is not something to give to those who do not cook.
13. Personalized Mug
I bought my grandma a photo mug with our family picture. It costs approximately $12. However, she did not want to drink from the mug. Instead, she placed the mug as a decoration. Her reason is that the mug is “too special to drink from.” But the problem is that the gift is not really useful. If I will do this again, I would opt for something that she will really use. However, this gift is not for those who want useful gifts.
And…
Having used so many wonderful gifts for grandma, it has made me conclude that what matters most to her is memories. The best gifts for grandma seem to be simple, emotional, and personal. Time, effort, and attention count most, and money matters the least. Even small things like writing and having meals have lasted longer in memory than many expensive gifts.

I have based all of these ideas off of real life with my grandma and helping my friends decide what mothers day gifts for grandma or christmas gifts for grandma would be the best. I decided to do this list because I wanted to do something real, not just another fake “gift guide” that no real person would even consider giving.
